Idris Elba is Sick of the James Bond Talk

Lots of buzz has surrounded Daniel Craig’s departure as James Bond, as well as the possibility of Idris Elba taking over. But Elba says enough is enough.

The Mirror is reporting an interview with Idris Elba in which the English actor states that “enough is enough. I can’t talk about [Bond] anymore.”

Comments by current James Bond actor Daniel Craig have hinted at the notion that Craig may not return for another Bond film. Following these comments, speculation over possible Bond replacements began circling, and Elba took the brunt of this talk.

Elba was a major player of speculation due to the 2014 Sony e-mail hack, which revealed an e-mail from Amy Pascal, chairman of Sony, that stated her endorsement of Elba as the next Bond.

To be fair, Elba would make a great James Bond. However, the speculation veered in negative directions when current Bond author Anthony Horowitz, author of the recently released Trigger Mortis, claimed that Elba was “too street” to play Ian Fleming’s spy.

These comments, which caused a social media backlash, is cited as a major reason why Elba is fatigued by the Bond conversation.

“I’m probably the most famous Bond actor in the world, and I’ve not even played the role,” Elba said.

It is understandable that Elba is tired of all this speculation, given he was never seeking out the role in the first place. It would be great if he was eventually tapped as Craig’s successor, but if he is frustrated by the talk now he may not even want the part by the time he is offered it.

I want to see Elba be Bond. I think he is the perfect fit for the role. The creative team could choose to take his Bond down the same rugged, gritty path as Craig or flip it back to a more classic, suave image of Bond. I think Elba could pull off either with veritable ease.
