James Bond news and notes: Blofeld’s volcano erupts in Japan

Here’s the most recent James Bond news:

For the first time in seven years, the Shinmoedake volcano in Japan has erupted. The volcano was used as a primary shooting location in 1967’s You Only Live Twice. It was the exterior location of Blofeld’s lair, in which the volcano has been hallowed out and used as control center. According to reports, the eruption spewed hot ash  about 12,000 feet into the air and caused flights to be grounded.

In other news…

Some cold water might be poured on all that Danny Boyle-Bond 25 talk. Boyle has reportedly begun work with Love Actually writer Richard Curtis on a new film for Universal. This would appear to end any ideas that Boyle will direct the next Bond film.

The late Roger Moore was among the film personalities memorialized at the 90th Academy Awards. In terms of the awards themselves, former Bond director of photography Roger Deakins (Skyfall) took home the award for Cinematography for Blade Runner 2049.

What is London Girl? Not the song by The Pogues. Instead, London Girl is the title of a new spy-thriller series from London 5 Studios. The show is set to begin filming this summer with an unnamed female lead in a so-called “Bond”-like role.

Upcoming birthdays: Paul Haggis, co-writer of Casino Royale, will turn 65 on March 7. The recently deceased Lewis Gilbert would have turned 98 on March 6.
